Hangman's fracture also known as traumatic spondylolisthesis of the axis is defined as a fracture resulting in separation of the anterior and posterior elements of the axis. The treatment in the majority of cases should be conservative resulting in excellent outcomes. If surgery is warranted, then either an anterior cervical discectomy at C2-3 or posterior instrumentation have equal efficacy and safety.
