Hangman's fracture also known as traumatic spondylolisthesis of the axis is defined as a fracture resulting in separation of the anterior and posterior elements of the axis. If surgery is warranted, then either an anterior cervical discectomy at C2-3 or posterior instrumentation have equal efficacy and safety.
